What Happens When You Downgrade Your Plan
Downgrading from Team → Pro or Pro → Free affects your competitor slots, snapshot frequency, and digest cadence. Your historical data is not deleted when you downgrade.
Competitor Limit Enforcement
Each plan has a maximum number of active competitors:
| Plan | Max Competitors |
|---|---|
| Free | 2 |
| Pro | 10 |
| Team | 50 |
If you downgrade and currently have more competitors than your new plan allows, KompWatch will prompt you to deactivate the extras before the downgrade takes effect.
- You can choose which competitors to deactivate — KompWatch does not auto-select.
- Deactivating is the same as pausing — all snapshots and change history are preserved. You can reactivate them instantly if you upgrade again.
- Nothing is deleted. You will not lose historical data.
If you don't take action before the billing cycle ends, the downgrade will not complete until you resolve the competitor count. Your current plan remains active in the meantime.
Snapshot and Digest Frequency Changes
| Feature | Team | Pro | Free |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snapshot frequency | Hourly | Every 6 hours | Daily |
| Digest frequency | Real-time (within 1 hour) | Daily | Weekly |
After your downgrade takes effect (end of billing period):
- Snapshots switch to the new frequency on the next scheduled run. No gap in monitoring — the last snapshot before the downgrade stays in history.
- Digests switch cadence from the next send. If you downgrade from Team to Pro mid-week, your next digest will be daily, not real-time.
What Is Preserved After a Downgrade
Everything you've accumulated continues to exist in your account:
| Data | Preserved? |
|---|---|
| Snapshot history | Yes — all snapshots remain visible |
| Change history | Yes — all detected changes remain |
| Past digest emails | Yes — accessible on the Digests page |
| Competitor configurations (CSS selectors, names) | Yes |
| Deactivated (over-limit) competitors | Yes — paused, not deleted |
The only things that change are the rate at which new snapshots are taken and how often digest emails are sent.
Timing: When Does the Downgrade Take Effect?
Downgrades are scheduled for the end of your current billing period — you keep your current plan's features until then.
- If you're on a monthly plan billed on the 1st, and you downgrade on the 15th, the downgrade takes effect on the 1st of next month.
- You will receive an email confirmation with the effective date.
- You can change your mind and cancel the scheduled downgrade via Settings → Manage Subscription at any time before it takes effect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be charged a prorated amount for the remainder of the billing period? No. You keep your current plan until the period ends and are billed at the lower rate from the next period. No proration, no credits.
If I downgrade and reactivate competitors later, do I still have their full history? Yes. Deactivated competitors retain all snapshots and change history. When you reactivate (by upgrading or freeing a slot), monitoring resumes and history is intact.
What if I downgrade to Free? Do I lose Pro features immediately? No — Pro features remain active until the end of your current billing period. After that, monitoring continues for up to 2 competitors at daily snapshot frequency.
Can I temporarily downgrade and then upgrade again without losing data? Yes. Pausing competitors during a downgrade preserves all data. Reactivating restores full monitoring.
