What Happens to My Data if KompWatch Shuts Down or Gets Acquired?

It's a fair question — and one more customers are asking after watching Kompyte get absorbed into Adobe and Crayon get folded into SoftwareOne. Here's exactly what we commit to.

Your Data Belongs to You

All competitive data you've collected through KompWatch — snapshots, change logs, AI summaries, digests, and exported battlecards — is yours. We process and store it on your behalf; we don't own it, sell it, or treat it as a product asset.

If KompWatch Is Acquired

We will communicate any acquisition to customers with at least 60 days notice before any material change to:

  • Pricing or plan structure
  • Data handling practices
  • Service continuity

You'll receive email notification to your account address. We will not silently rebrand the product and hand off your data to a new entity without disclosure.

If KompWatch Shuts Down

In the unlikely event that KompWatch ceases operations:

  1. 90 days notice minimum — we will not pull the plug overnight. You'll have time to export your data and find alternatives.
  2. Full data export window — all customers (including Free) will get access to a full export during the notice period. This includes your complete change log, digest history, and competitor list in CSV/JSON format.
  3. Raw snapshot data — HTML snapshots and screenshot URLs will be included in final exports regardless of plan tier.
  4. No renewal charges — billing will stop immediately. Prorated refunds will be issued for any paid time remaining in annual plans.

How to Export Your Data Right Now (No Drama Required)

You don't need to wait for a shutdown notice to take your data with you. Export at any time:

  1. Go to kompwatch.com/competitors
  2. Click any competitor → Change HistoryExport
  3. Download CSV or JSON — includes date, change type, severity, and AI summary

Or export everything from the dashboard in bulk. For instructions, see Exporting Your Change Data →.

We recommend doing a full export quarterly as a matter of practice. It takes two minutes and means your competitive history lives in a format you control regardless of what any vendor does.

What We Can't Guarantee

We're honest about what we don't promise:

  • Raw HTML snapshot archives — the full HTML captured at each snapshot cycle is large. Exports include the AI summary and diff, not the raw HTML (screenshots as URLs are included).
  • Indefinite free hosting — if the service shuts down, even Free tier data will be exported but not hosted indefinitely.
  • Third-party integrations — if you've connected KompWatch to a Slack channel or Zapier workflow, those connections are on your end and will stop receiving data when the service does.

Our Position on Acquisitions

We built KompWatch specifically because the incumbent CI tools got acquired and stopped serving SMBs. We're aware of the irony of a customer asking us the same question.

Our operating principle: we will only consider acquisition scenarios that maintain the product's focus on smaller teams and self-serve customers. An outcome that locks customers into an enterprise bundle or kills the free tier isn't aligned with why we built this.

If this matters to you, choose monthly billing over annual — it gives you maximum flexibility if anything changes. See Annual vs Monthly Billing →.
